Prayer: When heaven is silent! November 9, 2007

Have you been praying for a long time and there is no answer? And now you are frustrated and wanted to give up. Where can you find answered prayer? Only when you hear so and so talk about it. Or maybe you hear somebody giving testimony in the church. Or maybe you can find it only in the bible. But as for you, nothing, no answer! Heaven is silent! God is quiet!

Your situation may be like Joseph in Pharaoh’s prison, you are surrounded by four corners of wall. You are unable to find a single light for direction and not knowing what in the world is going on or which way to go. You are desperate. You want a way out but none!

What must you do? Nothing! Sorry to tell you about that. When heaven is silent (God is quiet), like Joseph, be silent and do nothing! Take note, even though Joseph interpreted the dreams of the cupbearer and baker correctly, nothing actually happened. He was still in the prison. Joseph did nothing. He waited before God. It was only after 2 years the answer came.

God in his divine way rescued Joseph out of prison through interpreting Pharaoh’s dream. Next, Joseph became the Prime Minister of Egypt. Nobody has thought about that. Not even Joseph himself, he knew he was going to be someone great but when and how was in the mind of God.

Similarly, you may be praying for something and there is no answer (yet), don’t give up, hang on to your faith. As long as your life is committed to God and you are not walking in willful rebellion against the will of God, then know that God is still in control and He is still guiding. Perhaps, silent guidance!

Know deep down in your heart, when you pass through the waters, He will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze (Isaiah 43:2). He is watching over you.

One of the bible verses that encourage me during such time is Psalm 27:13-4.

I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.

Be reminded; tell yourself loudly, you will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Do not be discouraged! Take heart, God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. He is still the same God as in the bible. He answers prayer. He specializes in parting the Red Sea, setting the captives free, healing the broken hearted, making the blind to see, casting out demon and resurrecting the dead.

And rest be assured, prayer is still the way to tap into the mighty power of God. Do not give up on praying; do not give up on God. It was mentioned twice in verse 14, wait for the Lord, be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Be patient, do not give up!

How long do you have to wait? I don’t know, only God knows! What I do know is that you have to hang on to the promise of God, it will come, God will answer your prayer. It is such persistence and faith in God that will carry you through.

Another bible verse that ministered to me is found in Isaiah 43:18-19.

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.

God works beyond our imagination. In a split second the whole situation may change. He will make a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland. He will do it. He will do new thing. Do not try to be smart! Just wait before Him.

Lastly, I do have many occasions where I have to wait (4 years, 7 years). I have come to learn a precious lesson – waiting time is never wasted time, waiting time is growing time. During those periods of waiting, I have learned to trust in God, draw closer to Him (instead of drifting apart) and believe Him for greater things, amen.

It was C.S. Lewis who made it clear to me in the book ‘What Christians belive’

I don’t have it with me right now but he explained in a way only mr Lewis could, how we all go through peaks and valleys of faith, and its in the valleys where we pull our selves closer to God

when we realize we need him

and personally I belive, God lets you walk on your own from time to time, he is always there but like a good father he wants to see us walk on our own

thats just my humble opnion

Thanks John for your comment. It really motivates me to write indeed great article.

Thanks also to Josh, your humble opinion is valuable. Truly, it is during tough time I’ve learned to grow closer to God. And the important thing you pointed out is right (which many failed to see), He is right there with us! Though heaven is silent but God is beside watching over us.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, FOR YOU ARE WITH ME; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4
