Are you having too much sleep? October 8, 2007
Posted by Han in : Personal Development , trackbackA proper amount of sleep is essential for good health. Lack of sleep is one of the consequences of business problems or of doing evil. However, God’s primary concern for sleep is not that we get too little, but that we get too much.
This article is not intended to deprive you from sleep. If you have been busy lately and do not have sufficient rest, then I would suggest you to take a good and refreshing sleep. You can also read more about resting here. But the “too much sleep” that I am referring to is for those who sleep too much and by doing so has already developed a pattern of laziness!
As for these people, there are 7 cautions from the bible:
1) Be cautious of the bondage sleep
As a door turns on its hinges, so a sluggard turns on his bed. Proverbs 26:14
2) Be cautious of sleep that disables
Laziness brings on deep sleep, and the shiftless man goes hungry. Proverbs 19:15
3) Be cautious of loving sleep
Do not love sleep or you will grow poor; stay awake and you will have food to spare. Proverbs 20:13
4) Be cautious of sleep that robs
A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest - and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man. Proverbs 24:33-34
5) Be cautious of sleep that disappoint God
How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? Proverbs 6:9
6) Be cautious of little extra sleep
A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest - and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man. Proverbs 24:33-34
7) Be cautious of inappropriate sleep
He who gathers crops in summer is a wise son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son. Proverbs 10:5
Lastly, having too much sleep will cultivate the habit of laziness and the end result of laziness leads to poverty. In order to be successful, first you need to conquer that laziness in you.

For the last three years I have had an ongoing battle to overcome laziness. At first I simply called it “procrastination” but God has come to show me that it is more than procrastination, but that I have become that sluggard that he refers to in Proverbs 6:9. As you mentioned in the other articles, ‘How to overcome laziness?’ and ‘7 characteristics of a lazy man,’ God requires so much more of us and by being laziness we cannot enjoy God’s best. Thank you for your godly advice! Continue to allow the Lord to use you as you encourage victims of laziness, such as myself, to step up, lean on the Lord, and be set free from this bondage of sin!
