7 characteristics of a lazy man October 2, 2007
Posted by Han in : Personal Development , trackbackThe power of laziness cannot be underestimated, if left untreated it can be very destructive and crippling. It will hinder you from achieving great thing in life. It is not God’s will for you to live in this manner. God has a big plan for you; do not let laziness stop you!
What are the 7 characteristics of a lazy man?
1) He does not believe that he is lazy
The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who answer discreetly. Proverbs 26:16
Laziness is a by-product. It is not a lazy man wanted to be called as. Thus a lazy man will reject being labeled as one. He will assure you that he would work if there were fewer obstacles in his path and waiting for more favorable working conditions. In the meantime, he will only think of the reasons why he cannot start the projects which he knows he need to.
These reasons may include the false notion of too much work injures one’s health and that there is an easier way to get things done. He reminds himself of the dangers of overexertion and the possibility of blunting his lifestyle by unnecessary labor. He is quick to explain his views to any who wonder why he is not working at the moment.
2) He makes little soft choices in life
A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest - and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man. Proverbs 6:10-11
Laziness develops gradually. It happens to normal people who begin making little surrenders in daily decision. These little surrenders seem harmless – staying in bed just a little longer, taking a little more rest during the day, waiting a few more minutes before starting a project, or spending a little more time in idling.
These daily surrenders come from making the soft choices in life, such as refusal to be subject to adverse working condition. Soon these little soft choices will become a habit of life. Laziness brings on deep sleep, and the shiftless man goes hungry (Proverbs 19:15).
3) He does not value the importance of time or seasons
Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in slave labor. (Proverbs 12:24)
The lazy man is not an initiator. To him one day is as good as another. What he does not do today can be done tomorrow. He does not understand the value of time. His basic motto in life is to live for the moment and let the future take its own course.
The lazy man does not understand that he must give account to God for the way that he uses his time. Therefore, the lazy man loses the freedom to make his own choices and becomes a save of the diligent, by whose industry he will be kept alive.
4) He will not finish tasks
I went past the field of the sluggard, past the vineyard of the man who lacks judgment; thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins. Proverbs 24:30-31
A lazy person is lethargic in everything he does. Each task is like climbing a mountain. It takes endless time to complete. If he is visited by success, he does not recognize or value it. It simply means more work. Thus, he allows opportunities to slip by. Whatever he is taken care of becomes a burden to him.
5) He lives in a world of day dreaming
The sluggard’s craving will be the death of him, because his hands refuse to work. All day long he craves for more, but the righteous give without sparing. Proverbs 21:25-26
When the lazy person is not sleeping, he desires to get things done. The tension between his restless mind and his inactive body produces frustration. His desires are also destructive because they are related to his own sensual pleasure. These indulgences in turn produce more laziness.
6) He brings painful damage to his employers
One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys. Proverbs 18:9
A lazy employee is not just unproductive, he is destructive. His presence on the job is worse than his absence! His lack of initiative and follow up becomes very costly to those who are counting on him.
At first, employers may try to adapt to his laziness by transferring him to a less strategic position. This damages his self-esteem and prompts him to give reasons why things did not work out as they should have, thus creating disloyalty and spreading discontent. As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so is a sluggard to those who send him Proverbs 10:26).
7) He is the victim of self-induced fears
The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside!” or, “I will be murdered in the streets!” Proverbs 22:13
Laziness results in fears which in turn reinforce more laziness. These fears are based on the fact that a lazy person knows he must be realistic. He knows that he must have a source of food. Rather than stealing it, he will beg for it. His lack of food is a result of making soft choices and of the fears which rationalized his choices. As an escape from his fears, he will resort to more sleep.
Lastly, look at the book of Proverbs in the bible, there are so many quotations related to a lazy person. God knows it’s destructive and crippling power and He wants to deliver you from being a lazy man.
As I mentioned in the beginning of this article, laziness will hinder you from achieving great thing in life. It is not God’s will for you to live such a life. God has a big plan for you; do not let laziness stop you!

Im Jason .. just a student….i really admit that we…the community should take this opportunity to make a donation…right now.. because we believe that we are building treasure in the heaven as we donate…I really hope to see people around us live happily ever … as we had helped them by just donating some ….as we donate we can ensure that we have done our part as a human being that god have given us…Well thats all….
Hi Jason, I am encouraged by what you have to say about donation. Yes, I think we have to think of ways we can contribute to the society, espeacially those who are in need. It can be donation, offering some helps or showing some simple gesture of encouragement. I believe it will create an impact on the people in our surrounding with this little that we can offer.
