Life is Short, Live Well! February 28, 2007
Posted by Han in : Life's Challenge , trackbackIn less than 4 months, I have witnessed the death of 3 persons. Indeed, life is short. We will never know when the day of our departure is. It can be tomorrow, it can be the day after tomorrow or maybe 1 year, 10 years or 50 years later.
The problem is we will never know but most of us think that we have lots of time left. How nice it is if we can ask God to reveal our lifespan on this earth. Perhaps by this way we will treasure our time. If God were to tell you, you have 3 months left on this world, what will you do? What if God say that you have only 1 day left, what will be your reaction. I guess all of us must be shocked!
Alright let’s do some exercise, take out a piece of paper and a pen. You can divide into 3 columns:
1) Things to do
2) Places to go
3) People to meet
Now, you can list down all the things that are yet to accomplish. Next, fill in the places that you would like to go and lastly, the people whom you will like to meet. You will discover that there are still a lot of things yet to do. Our normal reaction is we still have a lot of time. But but!!! How do we know that we still a lot of time? As mentioned earlier we will never know when the day of our departure is.
Indeed, life is short and my encouragement to everyone is to live well. Live our lives to its maximum potential; fulfill our dreams and vision. Let us not waste our time. Let us live as though today is our last day. Let us regard every second and every minute as our last. Indeed, life is short, live well!
I want to take an example from the bible to illustrate this. It is the story of the prodigal son; found in Luke 15:11-32. There was a man who had 2 sons. The younger son came to his father and demanded his share of the estate and the father divided his property between them. Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living.
To cut the long story short, the younger son spent all that he had until nothing was left. He was forced to work and he ate pig’s food. Thank God, he came to realization; he repented and went back to his father.
From this story I want to introduce 2 very important principles:
WASTING VS INVESTING
Prodigal actually means wasting away. The prodigal son squandered his wealth in wild living. He was wasting away his life. There were 7 things that he wasted:
1) Wealth
He wasted half of his father property on wild living.
2) Time
He wasted away his time.
3) Talents
He could have made full use of his talents.
4) Youthfulness
He wasted away a lot of his energy and strength.
5) Life’s purpose
He did not fulfill his life’s purpose.
6) Relationship
His relationship with his family members turned sour.
7) The kingdom of God
He did not tend his father’s business.
These are the 7 things that the prodigal son wasted away. Indeed, life is short, live well! Instead of wasting away our lives, why not INVEST in something profitable? Do not waste our lives doing nothing. I often hear people said: in the last 10 years I did not achieve anything. Look! I am very old now. Alright, in the past 10 years you did not achieve anything but what about the next 10 years?
Conclusion
Let us not procrastinate and waste away our lives, let us invest in something that is profitable. Indeed, LIFE IS SHORT, LIVE WELL!
All the Best,
Han
