Posted by Han in : Human Relationship , trackback

In order to build a good and long lasting relationship we must understand the process of communication. Communication is the process whereby understanding is created in the mind of the person when the message is sent by a communicator through appropriate channel or media.

Many a times relationship suffers when the message is not send across properly. It causes misunderstanding, misinterpretation, tension and stress. These can be avoided if we have some basic understanding of communication.

There are 3 elements involved in communication: First the communicator, second the message itself and third the receiver. In this article I want to focus on the first element, the communicator.

I would like to list out 10 components that are needed to enhance your communication skills and be a better and more effective communicator:

1) Bodily posture
While you may not notice, your bodily posture may be a hindrance to the receiver. For example, your body may be facing another direction while talking to someone.

2) Bodily contact
Sometimes it is good to give a firm hand shake or a pat on the back. People can feel that warmness and sincerity in you. Caution – do not be too touchy. It is very disrespectful.

3) Words
Keep your words plain and simple. Let it not be too complicated and hard to understand.

4) Tone, volume of voice
Make it easier for people to hear you. Speak with clear and loud voice. Please do not shout! You may modulate your voice to show emphasis.

5) Style of speech
Be relaxed, not so tensed and go straight to the point. This is where it is acceptable for most.

6) Appearance
Your outward appearance does play an important part in communication. You must give people a clean, neat and pleasant impression. Somehow they will listen to you.

7) Physical proximity
Do take not of the physical proximity. Depending on the distant, you need to speak louder or softer. You have to make sure they can hear properly.

8) Eye contact
It is also very disrespectful if you did not maintain proper eye contact. It gives people the impression you are not talking to them!

9) Facial expression
Proper facial expression will enhance your communication skill. You need not be very animated or funny but at least they can see your emotion.

10) Gesture
It is also good to have some hand gesture or head nods.

Want to be a better communicator? Review these 10 components to see which one you need to improve.

Good Article. In hindsight however, please do not forget that there are those born without the ability to naturally understand body language.
