My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in. Proverbs 2:11-12

Many people dislike the word “discipline”. It sounded harsh, brutal and cruel. Nobody wants to be punished. Indeed, no discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. I can still remember vividly during my younger days; being punished by my teacher. The swinging of the cane which ended up on my backside!!! So painful…

The feeling of being disciplined is terrible. You have to lower down yourself and eat the humble pie. It’s very unbearable to listen to someone correcting you. We do not want to be disciplined. We want to have the freedom, doing whatever thing we like without anyone lecturing us.

There are 2 choices to make when being disciplined; either you choose to ignore or you listen. So…what would be your choice? Before we continue, let us read the following 2 verses from Proverbs.

Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid. Proverbs 12:1

He who ignores discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored. Proverbs 13:18

So, the answer is obvious – choose to listen rather than ended up in poverty and shame. THE MAIN PROBLEM ABOUT DISCIPLINE IS WE ARE UNABLE TO HUMBLE OURSELVES. As long as we humble ourselves, discipline will work wonders. It will save us from falling into the trap, committing unnecessary problem and wasting a lot of time. Though it is unpleasant initially but it is beneficial at the end.

Be cautious, listen to the right person. Listen to our parents, listen to godly leaders, and listen to our pastors. God has placed them in our life with a purpose; to train us to be more effective and mature – indeed this is the way to life – the wise will listen!

Yes, indeed it is so true. I have experience his discipline through his Holy Spirit. It is tough and painful but this is to restrict our flesh and desire. As a result, we are not easily swayed, give in to unholy thoughts but holding on and grow stronger in Him! What you will get after going through the process is worthwhile and fulfilling.

Hi Evelyn, I agree with what you said. Many a time we focus too much on the painful discipline that we forgotten about the big plan of God. God is love, he discipline those he love. And the end result is much more better. One more thing I would like to add on is the sooner we let go of our fleshly desire, the faster the process of discipline ends. The problem is we hold too tightly on it. God knows that what is right and what is best for us just as the parents know what is best for the children.
