The True Spirit Of Christmas December 19, 2007

Posted by Han in : Current Affair , trackback

In most places around the world, Christmas is celebrated yearly as an annual holiday on the 25th of December. As a young boy, I remembered Christmas as “Santa Clause” with lots of presents and lots of singing of Christmas carols.

As I grew older, it’s all about partying. On a survey done on Americans to find out how they know about Christmas, 1/3 said that the birth of Jesus was what makes the holiday important while a majority would remember Christmas as a time of exchanging presents.

If you celebrate Christmas, what are your traditions on this day? How do your relatives and friends celebrate the holiday? By going to church? Decorating a Christmas tree? Exchanging presents? Singing and dancing?

Eating massive amounts of turkey or pie? There is nothing wrong with doing any of those but have we ever asked ourselves what really Christmas is all about just to find out if we have we ever celebrated it with the right spirit?

We may be familiar with all the Christmas tradition that had been practiced for years but what exactly is Christmas all about? Let us do a comparison between Christmas tradition in bold and the true spirit of Christmas as in italic below?

1. The Christmas tradition evolves on the spirit of giving to one another
The true spirit of Christmas is about God giving to us. Ephesians 2:8 “God by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing: it is the gift of God.

2. Christmas tradition involves purchasing of many gifts to be exchanged or given to friends and relatives. The gifts are normally perishable.
The true spirit of Christmas involves only One Gift and it is eternal. Romans 6:23 “ For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

3. Christmas tradition would include decorating many lights on Christmas trees at home, on streets, buildings & etc.

In the true spirit of Christmas, there is only One light. This light is able to light out our hearts and especially the hearts that are dark. 1 John 1:7 “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us all from all sin”

4. Many all over the world often celebrate the yearly Christmas holiday by partying all night long accompanied by alcohols. Many would get themselves drunk and some ended up in immoral activities.

The true spirit of Christmas is celebrated with the presence of God. Matthew 1:23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel.(which means, God with us)”

It is a day to be celebrated with joy as for unto us a child is born, who is Christ the Lord. Instead of getting ourselves drunk with wine on Christmas day, the bible teaches that we should be filled with the Spirit – Ephesians 5:18.

5. The celebration of Christmas traditionally would also mean ushering of a New Year for many which explains why many of the greeting cards had been worded as “Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year”.

The Bible teaches us clearly in John 10:10 that He had came that we may have life and have it abundantly. The true spirit of Christmas would then be to usher in a New Life rather then a New Year. Hence, our greetings should be a “Merry Christmas and A Happy New Life”!

So, have you thought of how you should celebrate your Christmas this year? For those who had bought many presents to give out to your friends and relatives, remember not to forget to give to your friends and relative the greatest gift of all gifts that is, Jesus as their personnel Savior.

Here, at ShareGodLove, we do hope that you will all celebrate Christmas in its true spirit.

“Have A Wonderful Blessed Christmas”.
